[about]
EAST ASIA
FILM FESTIVAL
IRELAND
The East Asia Film Festival Ireland brings to audiences in Ireland, innovative, independent and inspiring cinema from East Asia, and presents works otherwise unavailable from prominent and emerging writers and directors from diverse cultural and social backgrounds across East Asian cinema.
We run an annual festival hosted by the Irish Film Institute in Dublin’s Temple Bar, and a special on tour programme in venues in Galway, Limerick and Cork, together with EAFFI Discoveries, a strand of regular film screenings throughout the year of the East Asia Film Festival Ireland.
The films reflect on individual and communal experiences and dynamics in insightful and human ways. Inspiring fiction, documentary, classic and self-reflexive film essays to explore and expose the world around them in vivid ways, asking questions about society, culture, politics, personal and collective history in our ever more challenging times.
Selecting films and curating programmes is something we do each year in collaboration with friends of the festival — filmmakers, producers, critics, academics, and cinephiles from across East Asia. Long terms collaborators of the festival are: Professor Chris Berry, King’s College London (UK); Chuti Chang, Producer (Taiwan); Kazuhiro Soda, Documentarian (Japan); Jianjie Lin, Filmmaker (China); Trà My Nguyễn Hoàng, Photographer (Vietnam, based in Dublin)
Through its extensive programmes, EAFFI has welcomed in person over the years writer-directors Hou Hsiao-Hsien, Tsai Ming-Liang, Koji Fukada, Kazuhiro Soda, Anthony Chen and Jianjie Lin; screenwriter Chu Tien-Wen; director of photography Mark Lee Ping-Bing; actor Lee Kang-Sheng; producer Chuti Chang, Ziyang Lin; and film critic-curator Tony Rayns; and has commissioned online conversations and film introductions with writer-directors such as Koji Fukada, Kazuhiro Soda, Wang Bing, Chan Tze Woon, Longman Leung, Yu-Chieh Cheng, Christopher Makoto Yogi, Zheng Lu Xinyuan, Hien Mai and Tim Ellrich, Yukiko Sode, Julien Faraut, Ryusuke Hamaguchi, Anocha Suwichakornpong, Hong Khaou, Hsieh Pei-Ju, Jia Zhang-ke, Naomi Kawase, Patiparn Boontarig, Linh Tràn, Siyou Tan, Agnis Shen Zhongmin, and sound editor/mixer, Tu Duu-Chih.
